Caribou Biosciences is seeking a Director of Accounting.  This newly created position will help enable Caribou’s continued growth by establishing robust and compliant accounting processes and systems.  The incumbent has the opportunity to help build out Caribou’s financial capabilities including enabling successful implementation of NetSuite and other related financial systems.


The ideal candidate is a CPA possessing Big 4 audit experience, public-company quarterly close and reporting expertise, along with demonstrated knowledge of SEC reporting, Sarbanes Oxley, technical accounting memos, corporate taxation, fixed assets, and revenue recognition related to licensing and collaboration agreements within the biotech/pharma industry.  The successful candidate will possess high initiative and drive, strong technical skills, communication abilities and a collaborative mindset, along with the ability and desire to work in a scientific, dynamic start-up environment. 

The role will report to the VP Finance and Controller, and while initially remote, the expectation is that the Finance function will return on-site sometime in 2021.



  • Plan, own and drive financial statement close process (monthly/quarterly/annual) enabling accurate and timely close and accounting under US GAAP, including review of journal entries and account reconciliations
  • Perform necessary close activities to enable robust financial records (e.g. accrual preparation, variance analysis, management reporting)
  • Work closely with the VP of Finance and Controller to improve, automate, and document accounting processes
  • Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including fixed assets, project accounting, prepaids, accruals, cash management, treasury, reconciliations, revenue recognition, etc.
  • Enable successful implementation and operation of NetSuite, including interfacing sub-systems (procurement, payables, expense reimbursement, payroll, banking, etc.) with ERP system
  • Support preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and assist with disclosures as necessary
  • Identify and manage technical topics, including lease accounting, stock-compensation, significant contracts/license agreements, revenue recognition, etc.
  • Manage and resolve non-routine and non-standard accounting transactions
  • Identify, optimize and automate accounting processes driving efficient and streamlined close processes
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of internal control structure and ensure compliance with established controls
  • Coordinate and assist external auditors, tax consultants, and other service providers with PBC requests
  • Own and manage the chart of accounts to enable efficient rollup of financial statements, general ledger and subledgers
  • Ad hoc analysis and projects as needed


Required Qualifications

  • BS in Accounting or related field, CPA required
  • Minimum 6 years progressive accounting experience, with 3 years in an audit role with a Big 4 accounting firm
  • Robust understanding of financial statements, technical accounting, and public company quarterly/annual close processes in a GAAP environment
  • Ability to establish priorities, meet deadlines, multi-task, and work independently, and execute objectives without supervision
  • Understanding of functional area roles, responsibilities and interdependencies
  • Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills
  • Ability to manage and develop a diverse accounting team in a dynamic environment
  • Proficient using Google and Microsoft tools, and ERP systems
  • Demonstrated success initiating and leading cross-functional projects to successful completion
  • Significant attention to detail and strong organizational skills 


Preferred Qualifications

  • Active CPA
  • Strong knowledge of SEC Reporting and SOX 404 compliance
  • Proficient with NetSuite ERP
  • Current public biotech company experience, understanding clinical trials and related accruals, external manufacturing, and licensing/partnering agreements
  • Able to traverse between strategic and detail-oriented operational topics
  • Ability to prioritize, make rapid decisions and adjust to changing needs and timelines
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work on multiple projects in parallel
  • Personal attributes: team player, driven, passionate, curious, ability to deal with uncertainty, effective problem solver
