Caribou Biosciences is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company founded in 2011 by pioneers in CRISPR genome editing and headquartered in Berkeley, California. As a result of exciting developments both with Caribou’s internal pipeline programs and with the addition of a significant new external partnership, we have multiple early-stage projects at Caribou focused on the preclinical discovery and development of CAR-T cell therapy candidates. We are looking for experienced Senior Research Associates to help us propel this work forward. Using collaborative teamwork, as well as your experience and winning spirit, you will work closely and cross-functionally with other researchers on cutting-edge technologies to deliver on impactful research projects that we believe will ultimately positively impact the lives of patients. You will work with cutting edge science and have the opportunity to contribute broadly across multiple technical areas in the process of cell therapy candidate development. 


Responsibilities include:

  • Culturing primary human immune cells, including isolation, activation and expansion from PBMCs
  • Genome engineering using nucleofection and viral transduction procedures and advanced CRISPR gene editing technologies
  • Screening of scFvs for preclinical CAR-T programs using immune cell biology-based assays, including in vitro cytotoxicity and cytokine production assays
  • Multi-color flow cytometry and data analysis using FlowJo and Forecyt
  • Additional technical work may also include maintenance and expansion of tumor cell lines, proliferation assays, and lentiviral production and transduction to generate new target cell lines
  • Advanced level work may include strategizing CAR construct designs and development of novel in vitro functional assays to characterize CAR-T function
  • Coordinating experiments with other Scientists and RAs across functional groups
  • Documenting, analyzing and presenting data at internal meetings
  • Serve as a technical expert and mentor for other Research Associates as we expand and develop our project teams with the potential to manage junior associates
  • Provide leadership and technical guidance to further the development of best-in-class allogeneic CAR-T cell therapy products



  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Cell Biology, Immunology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or a related discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working in immunology or oncology research operations performing cell-based assays
  • Extensive experience in mammalian cell culture techniques, including primary cell culture
  • Broad experience with flow cytometry
  • Application of genome editing technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to solve challenging problems in cell-based assay development
  • Strong communication skills, self-motivation and proven ability to work in a team environment and independently
  • Experience with technical report writing
  • Ability to synthesize ideas and troubleshoot solutions using relevant primary literature
  • Willingness and ability to share occasional weekend cell culture duties


Nice-to-have (but not required):

  • High-throughput assay development
  • Experience evaluating therapeutic candidates in animal models
  • Experience with lab automation
  • Experience mentoring/training Research Associates at various levels
  • Prior experience working with cellular therapies or CRISPR technologies
