Caribou is seeking an experienced Senior Patent Agent/Senior Patent Counsel to join its Legal team. The candidate will help build the Company’s intellectual property portfolio and contribute to its global patent strategy. Successful candidates should have demonstrable skills in evaluating new discoveries and seeing such discoveries through the patenting process from innovation disclosure to patent issuance. Candidates will preferably have a strong understanding of U.S. and foreign patent systems, including patent filing and prosecution processes, innovations review, patent searching, and freedom-to-operate analyses. Initially the position will be remote, but the expectation is that the patent function will return on-site sometime in 2021.


The candidate must be motivated, enthusiastic, professional, and committed to working as a team player, interacting with individuals throughout the organization, with a special emphasis on research and development. Additionally, the candidate must have a strong attention to detail and to work independently and efficiently. Communication skills to interact effectively with internal stakeholders (e.g., research and development, business development, and management) are essential. This role will report to the Chief Legal Officer.  


Principal Responsibilities:


  • Draft and prosecute patent applications
  • Provide prosecution instructions to foreign counsel
  • Contribute to development and evaluation of Caribou’s intellectual property strategy
  • Lead IP due diligence for in-licensing opportunities
  • Conduct freedom-to-operate analyses and third-party portfolio assessments
  • Analyze new innovation disclosures and meet with scientists
  • Provide counseling on patent and related IP matters to the Caribou research team
  • Lead Patent Committee meetings
  • Present tutorials to the Company about intellectual property
  • Work closely with docketing support staff




  • A minimum of 10 years of IP experience in-house at a biotech or pharma company and/or at a law firm
  • Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office
  • Bachelor’s degree in the life sciences (immunology, molecular biology, etc.); advanced degree(s) desirable
  • For Senior Patent Counsel level, JD degree required, admitted to practice in California preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to grasp scientific and technical concepts quickly
  • Ability to collaborate, work independently, and balance competing priorities with a high level of professionalism and with the ability to reprioritize quickly and handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills; ability to provide IP advice in a clear, concise manner, both verbally and in writing
  • Deadline-driven
